Sophie-Justine Herr is a cellist in Frankfurt am Main. She plays regularly with the baroque ensemble Neumeyer Consort and is a member of the Ensemble Reflektor. She also played in orchestras such as the Freiburger Barockorchester, the Staatsorchester Stuttgart, Nationaltheater Mannheim and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester.
Whereas her pedagogical activities go, she presently teaches students between the ages of 6 and 60 years old.
Sophie-Justine Herr is a versatile musician and found her musical home in all periods from early time until now. It is important to her to feel the spirit of the respective time in order to discover work, score and instrument/sound perception in a new way. Accordingly, she is currently studying Historical Interpretation Practice with Kristin von der Goltz.
Beforehand she was mainly influenced by musicians such as Jean-Guihen Queyras, Tristan Cornut, Christoph Henkel and Adriana Contino, with whom she studied modern cello.
Additionally, she has always been in touch with contemporary music – an important musician to her is Lucas Fels. In contemporary music she has also worked with artists like Sir Simon Rattle, Matthias Pintscher and Barbara Hannigan, whom she got to know as a trainee at the Lucerne Festival Academy.
Chamber music – other than classical
An important part in Sophie-Justine Herr’s artistic work has always been music apart from the classical world. Since she was 14 years old, she has been playing cello in ensembles like Some of the Lovely and the trio Saitengesang and experimented with Rock and Folk Music from all over the world. She went on tour with the avantgarde-jazz band Hildegard lernt fliegen (Andreas Schaerer) and played at a Jazz Festival with Max Clouth Clan.
Classical chamber music
During her studies she played in numerous chamber music ensembles and studied the common repertoire from the classical and romantic period. Until today she is a popular chamber music partner because of her ability to respond to her colleagues with sensitivity and joy of playing.
She was a trainee of NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Lucerne Festival Akademie Orchester, Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchester and Philharmonisches Orchester Heidelberg. In addition she worked amongst others in the Staatsorchester Stuttgart, the Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Staatsorchester Darmstadt, the Kammerphilharmonie Frankfurt and in the Freiburger Barockorchester.
In many smaller orchestras she was solo-cellist, for example 2018 in Mozarts Entführung aus dem Serail (Musik und Theater Saar) under the baton of Stefan Bone.
As a soloist she recently played the Cello Concerto in a minor by Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach with an ensemble at the “Barocknächte“ in Darmstadt and in Weilburg.
Also she performed in the concert series Barocke Concerti with Cappella Academica Frankfurt, as well as with the Freiburger Kammersolisten and at the 26. Internationalen Sommerkonzerte in the Meldorfer Dom.
In addition she recorded a CD with solo works from K.Huber, Y. Pagh-Paan und G. Steinke.
Since 2012 she is offering private cello lessons to kids, adults and seniors. She is also teaching at the Kreismusikschule Limburg.
